OVERVIEW
Pilates – beneficial for all ages and fitness levels

Pilates with Caroline delivers mat-based Pilates classes, conducted by an experienced chartered physiotherapist and certified APPI Pilates instructor.  Each Pilates class is delivered to a small group, ensuring that every participant enjoys maximum benefit through regular feedback on technique and options for modification.

Pilates targets the postural muscles of the abdomen and spine to develop control, alignment, muscle strength, stability and flexibility. Working on your core muscles through Pilates can improve musculoskeletal pains, including back and neck pain and it can help improve performance and reduce the risk of injury. Pilates is a mindful practice, with a focus on breathing, and it can help to promote relaxation and well-being.

Classes should be booked in advance and are run in blocks of six sessions.

HISTORY OF PILATES
Pilates – developed as a rehabilitation and well-being technique

Pilates takes its name from German born Joseph Pilates, who was born in 1880. Joseph suffered from a number of childhood illnesses and developed his own exercises in attempt to make himself fit and healthy.

During World War 1, Joseph trained as an orderly in a hospital, rehabilitating patients using the exercises he had devised. He discovered that individuals completing his exercise programmes recovered more quickly from illness.

After the war, Pilates went on to teach his exercises to the dance community. He worked with pioneers of movement technique such as Rudolph Laban, and went on to open his first Pilates studio in America in 1923.

The Pilates method has continued to develop and evolve over the years. It is popular in physiotherapy practice worldwide as an effective method of rehabilitation and injury prevention.

FAQs
Your Pilates questions answered

HOW DO YOUR PILATES CLASSES DIFFER FROM OTHERS?
The type of Pilates I teach is modified Pilates. I have received my training through APPI and am a qualified Physiotherapist. As a Physiotherapist I have experience of treating patients with a range of musculoskeletal problems and conditions.

The APPI method is modified Pilates and has been designed by Physiotherapists specifically for use in the rehabilitation setting. Its application ranges from clients with low back pain to sports people wanting to improve their performance. The APPI have used the traditional Pilates exercises and broken them down to create exercises that are safe and suitable for specific populations.

MODIFIED AND CLASSICAL PILATES, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Classical Pilates originates from Joseph Pilates' work, authentically following his exercises and the order in which they were performed. Modified Pilates is based on Joseph’s work, but the exercises have been modernised to fit with research, influenced heavily from physical therapy and bio-mechanics. Many exercises remain the same, but a new exercises or variations have been added allowing for injury rehabilitation and creativity by the instructor.

DO I HAVE TO BRING ANY EQUIPMENT WITH ME?
Please bring a mat and some water.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Please wear loose fitting, or flexible, clothing suitable for exercise. Classes should be completed wearing socks or bare foot.

I HAVE NEVER DONE PILATES BEFORE, DOES THIS MATTER?
Pilates is tailored to your needs whilst also strengthening the whole body. There is a diversity of exercises and modifications to suit a range of levels. The beginners and improvers class would be suitable for you. During this class we focus on the basics of Pilates and plenty support is provided to enhance your experience and help you get the most from your class..
